Week in TV: May 17-23

The series finale of ‘Lost’—and other TV highlights this week
By Rebecca Ford, Metromix

This week, there’s an accumulated three and a half hours of new “Lost” on TV, and that’s not including a couple additional hours of “Lost” reruns and late night talk show post-show specials. It may sound excessive, but for all the Losties out there, it may not be enough. though nothing may ever be enough, because when the series ends this Sunday, so does the journey of the survivors of Flight 815, and just about everyone and their evil twin is wondering how the creators of this show plan on tying up six years of mysterious loose ends.

Outside the “Lost” universe, finales for “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Community,” Parks and Recreation,” The Office” and “30 Rock” also air this week. And with so many ends this week, there’s one glorious new beginning: Fox’s cop comedy, “The Good Guys.”

Week in TV

By Rebecca Ford, Metromix
Monday, May 3, 2010

Two types of games return to the field this week. In one corner, “Friday Night Lights” is back for its fourth season with new players joining the Panthers and the newly-formed Lions. Fierce competition will explode on and off the field.

In the other corner, the table-flipping queens of New Jersey return for “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” The divisions between the ladies are even deeper this year, and tears will be shed.

Also, May sweeps will bring a lot of guest stars to the TV. Because an extra famous face will always win us over.

Friday Night Lights, ya’ll!

One of my favorite shows is back on May 7 . Check out my Metromix article:

‘Friday Night Lights’ returns to the field
The Lions and the Panthers tackle season four

By Rebecca Ford
Special to Metromix

“Friday Night Lights” may be a show about a small town Texas high school football team, but after three seasons it’s pretty clear that the critically acclaimed show is more about what happens off the field.

If you’ve never seen this gritty, character-driven drama, now is the time to tune in because the graduation of several star actors last season has opened an opportunity for talented new faces to join the team.

There will be plenty of new drama for the fourth season because Dillon High has been split into two different schools, the West Dillon Panthers and the East Dillon Lions. Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has been assigned as the coach of the newly formed, ragtag Lions. Not only will he have to build a field, find funding and create a team for the new school, but he’ll also have to find peace with his wife Tami (Connie Britton), who will be principal of West Dillon.

The new players this season include the troublesome, but talented Vince Howard (Michael B. Jordan from “The Wire”) and the wholesome farm boy Luke Cafferty (Matt Lauria).

Off the field, Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) will deal with her break up from her long-term boyfriend Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). Saracen’s best friend and current senior Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) will find a new love interest in newcomer Jess Merriweather (Jurnee Smollett). And last, but definitely not least, Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) will discover life after football, although that may lead him down a dangerous path.

New on DVD

Another weekly feature I’m working on for Metromix is New on DVD, which lists the upcoming DVD releases for the week.

Metromix DVD pick of the week:

“Mad Men: Season 3”
Stars: Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, Christina Hendricks

If you thought seasons one and two of “Mad Men” were dramatic, then you’d better hold on to your Gibson martini because season three is all sorts of crazy. The British infiltrate the office when Sterling Cooper is bought out, little Sally Draper is afraid of her new baby brother and Don Draper’s secret identity becomes not-so-secret. Throw in a freak lawnmower accident and a secret gay love tryst, and you’ve got the most potent season yet.

Extras: Commentaries with creator Matthew Weiner and the cast; “Medgar Evers: An Unsung Hero” featurette; “Clearing the Air: The History of Cigarette Advertising” featurette; “We Shall Overcome: The March on Washington” featurette
Price: DVD: $49.98; Blu-Ray: $49.99

Week in TV

My newest weekly feature for Metromix highlights the upcoming TV premieres for the week. Here’s this week’s column:

By Rebecca Ford, Metromix

Have you heard that “Lost” is returning for its final season this week? Because if you haven’t, you’re probably living under a rock, or on a time-traveling island.

But that’s not the only TV highlight for the first week of February. Super Bowl XLIV airs this Sunday, and, speaking of football, Michael Vick is getting his own reality show.

This Tuesday, MTV’s duo of non-reality reality shows return to the tube, bringing with them new faces, new drama and, of course, new boy trouble. But, perhaps not so surprisingly, the biggest problems in the new seasons seem to be between the ladies, who bring the term “frenemies” to a whole new level…

Weekend watchin

Don’t know if I’ve actually mentioned this before, but I write about weekend TV for metromix every week. Here’s this week’s article:

September 24, 2009

We’re sending a thank you prayer up to the TV gods because weekends are back! “Dollhouse” returns to Fridays, and “SNL” swoops in to save Saturday nights. Not to mention that the two bad boys of Sunday nights on Showtime are also back with a vengence…

Friday, September 25
What: “Dollhouse”
When: 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox
Why: Joss Whedon’s baby about “Dolls” who go on dangerous missions was off to a slow start last year, but looks much more promising this season now that Echo’s tapped into her multiple personalities. In the season premiere, Echo marries a wealthy British businessman connected to one of Ballard’s open cases.

The cast of HBO’s “True Blood” gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate the new season of the sexy vampire-loves-human saga.

Creator Alan Ball and stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer dropped clues about what the second season will bring, including a trip to Texas, new love interests, more dirty secrets and a whole lotta sex (even an orgy!). Check out what the stars had to say about the show, their characters and the new season. —By Rebecca Ford, Metromix
