‘Friday Night Lights’ returns to the field
The Lions and the Panthers tackle season four

“Friday Night Lights” may be a show about a small town Texas high school football team, but after three seasons it’s pretty clear that the critically acclaimed show is more about what happens off the field.

If you’ve never seen this gritty, character-driven drama, now is the time to tune in because the graduation of several star actors last season has opened an opportunity for talented new faces to join the team.

There will be plenty of new drama for the fourth season because Dillon High has been split into two different schools, the West Dillon Panthers and the East Dillon Lions. Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has been assigned as the coach of the newly formed, ragtag Lions. Not only will he have to build a field, find funding and create a team for the new school, but he’ll also have to find peace with his wife Tami (Connie Britton), who will be principal of West Dillon.

The new players this season include the troublesome, but talented Vince Howard (Michael B. Jordan from “The Wire”) and the wholesome farm boy Luke Cafferty (Matt Lauria).

Off the field, Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) will deal with her break up from her long-term boyfriend Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). Saracen’s best friend and current senior Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) will find a new love interest in newcomer Jess Merriweather (Jurnee Smollett). And last, but definitely not least, Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) will discover life after football, although that may lead him down a dangerous path.
