Review: ‘Finishing Heaven’

Robert Feinberg is some people’s worst nightmare. The 59-year-old was once a 22-year-old with the world at his feet, working on a movie that could have made him the next big director.

But he never finished the movie. And perhaps, he believes, never really fulfilled his destiny.

HBO Documentary Films’ Finishing Heaven follows the director as he tries to finally finish his film Heaven, a very ’70s psychedelic film with no real story line, just a lot of heavy eye shadow and dramatic scenes.

As unique as Feinberg’s tale may seem, however, this film is just another story about another dream that died in the process. There are plenty of people in this world who dreamed of being an astronaut or a film star and instead ended up as a grocery store clerk, a bank teller or (in Feinberg’s case) a cruise greeter…

This Tuesday, MTV’s duo of non-reality reality shows return to the tube, bringing with them new faces, new drama and, of course, new boy trouble. Don’t know if I’ve actually mentioned this before, but I write about weekend TV for metromix every week. Here’s this week’s article:

We’re sending a thank you prayer up to the TV gods because weekends are back! “Dollhouse” returns to Fridays, and “SNL” swoops in to save Saturday nights. Not to mention that the two bad boys of Sunday nights on Showtime are also back with a vengence…

Friday, September 25
What: “Dollhouse”
When: 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox
Why: Joss Whedon’s baby about “Dolls” who go on dangerous missions was off to a slow start last year, but looks much more promising this season now that Echo’s tapped into her multiple personalities. In the season premiere, Echo marries a wealthy British businessman connected to one of Ballard’s open cases.

Costa Rica

As I continue my attempt to travel around the entire world, I went to Costa Rica last weekend for a wedding. We stayed at the Paradisus Playa Conchal near Liberia. It’s a beautiful all-inclusive resort right on the beach. My kind of place. I spent a day zip-lining, horse back riding and going to natural hot springs, which was probably one of the best adventures ever. It’s a beautiful country. I hope to make it back there someday.

Bacon. Bay. Con. B-A-C-O-N.

Sometimes just saying the word out loud makes us feel all warm and toasty inside.

The undisputed King of Cured Meats has developed a rather large fan following, sparking full-blown bacon-mania in recent years. And with International Bacon Day on September 5, we’re getting into the spirit with this collection of scrumptious (and totally strange) products inspired by—you guessed it—bacon.

Bacon lip balm. Bacon wallets. Bacon lollipops. Why haven’t you started clicking already?
